My name is Gary Roberts, affectionately known as the “Fat Man” from the Killing the Fat Man series. To say that I have gone from “fat to fit” is only the tip of the iceberg. My transformation began with a decision to make changes in my life and would not ultimately have been possible if it weren’t for the incredible support and dedication from those around me, filling me with encouragement and refusing to let me find any further excuses for the “Fat Man” to live on.
For 18 years, I had let myself go. My priorities in life became everything but myself. I never gave a thought to the damage I was doing by eating poorly and failing to physically take care of my body and mind. I often found solace in food, using it as a stress reliever. For years I ignored the results...the pounds adding up. I spent a bulk of those 18 years in denial. At some point, the downward spiral consumed me and I saw no way out.....and then there was CrossFit.
CrossFit, by definition, is a strength and conditioning program through constantly varied functional movement at a high intensity, but ask multiple people, and you will get many answers for what CrossFit means to them.
'What is CrossFit?' To me, simply it’s a program that works. If you come in and do the work, you will see results. More importantly, what separates CrossFit even further, in my opinion, is the community...that is the magic sauce. This simple element is why I am still here.
The individuals of the CrossFit community are the ones who made me believe something that I never thought possible. I went to the box and handed over everything I had. Here coaches, you have control of it. Just tell me what to do.
They did, I took orders...and it worked. That is the difference. They scaled my thoughts long enough until I was strong enough to do it on my own...and then they handed me back the control and said do it yourself.
People change lives. 'The Program' changes quality of life. CrossFit does all of the above. You won't get it anywhere else.
Still wondering, “What is CrossFit?” Come in, take off your jacket and stay a while. We won't kill ya (well, maybe just a little), but you'll thank me for it later.
